What is Bronchitis? Symptoms, Causes, Preventions, Treatment, and Types of Bronchitis

When the bronchial tubes which carries air to our lungs, get inflamed and swollen that condition is called bronchitis. It is often developed from a cold or other respiratory infection and creates a constant irritation or inflammation in the lining of the bronchial tubes, often due to smoking. Both smokers and non-smokers can develop bronchitis.


Types of bronchitis


i) Acute bronchitis: It is more common form and usually caused by a cold or a flu viral infection. It lasts for 10-14 days, whereas its symptoms are noticed till three weeks.


ii) Chronic bronchitis: It persists for three months and is caused by initial respiratory infection or illness, exposure to tobacco smoke or other irritating substances in the air. It is a more serious form because it never heals rather the virus tends to attack the person again and again.


Symptoms of Bronchitis


A) Acute bronchitis


It lasts for a specific length of time and commonly follows a similar pattern to a viral infection, such as a cold or the flu.


Common symptoms are:

  • A cough with or without mucus

  • Chest discomfort or soreness

  • Runny, stuffy nose and blocked nose

  • Body aches, fever and chills

  • A mild headache and body aches

  • Shortness of breath

  • Sore throat

B) Chronic bronchitis


During the initial stage, mild or no symptoms are experienced, but as the disease gets worse, symptoms turn severe.

  • Frequent coughing that produces a lot mucus

  • Wheezing

  • Shortness of breath during physical activity

  • Chest discomfort

  • Frequent colds and flu

  • Weight loss and weakness in lower muscles

  • Swelling in ankles, feet, or legs.

  • Chest and stomach muscles sore.


Causes of Bronchitis


A) Acute bronchitis


Common causes are:

  • A cold or a flu virus

  • A bacterial infection that causes inflammation

  • Exposure to substances that irritate the lungs; tobacco smoke, dust, fumes, vapours and air pollute.

  • Asthma or an allergy


B) Chronic bronchitis


Common causes are:


i) Excessive smoking tobacco.

ii) Long term exposure to air pollution, dust and toxic fumes from the environment

iii) Genetic condition; alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency can play a role in causing chronic bronchitis.

iv) Repeated attacks of acute bronchitis

v) A history of respiratory disease or gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD)

vi) Over exposure to pesticides.
